As Grand Central Station celebrates its 100th birthday today, let’s remember that in 1965 the Penn Central Co. proposed the erection of a 55-story tower atop the station’s main building (the facade would have been proposed), designed by architect Marcel Breuer.

The ensuing legal battle made it all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, and their decision in Penn Central Co. vs. the City of New York still serves as the basis for most of the country’s local landmark laws and ordinances.
